Water Quality in the Salt Lake City Metro Area

The Wasatch Front metro stretches along the base of the Rocky Mountains, with 1.2 million people relying on snowpack-fed streams, reservoirs, and aquifers for their drinking water. Salt Lake City draws from Big Cottonwood, Little Cottonwood, Parleys, and City Creek canyons – mountain watersheds that provide high-quality surface water. Provo operates from Deer Creek Reservoir and groundwater wells. West Valley City, Utah's second-largest city, purchases water from the Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District, which blends multiple sources.

Utah's water supply is inseparable from its snowpack. In low-snow years, the entire front experiences supply pressure, and the quality of available water can shift as different sources are tapped.

What the PFAS Data Shows Across Salt Lake City Metro

Hill Air Force Base, located about 30 miles north of Salt Lake City in Davis County, is one of the most significant PFAS contamination sites in the western United States. The Air Force has confirmed extensive PFAS groundwater contamination from decades of AFFF use, with monitoring wells near the base showing concentrations in the thousands of ppt. Plume investigations have found contamination extending into the communities of Layton, Clearfield, and South Weber.

Within the SLC metro proper, UCMR5 monitoring has shown low PFAS detections in Salt Lake City's mountain canyon water supply. The concern concentrates in communities north of the city near Hill AFB and in areas dependent on shallow groundwater.

Utah has not adopted state-specific PFAS MCLs, deferring to federal standards. According to the Utah Department of Environmental Quality, Hill AFB's contamination has affected at least four community water systems in Davis and Weber counties, though treatment systems funded by the Air Force have brought tap water levels into compliance.

How Salt Lake City Metro Compares

Salt Lake City's canyon-sourced water is among the cleanest municipal supplies in the region – comparable to Denver's mountain reservoir system and Portland's Bull Run watershed. The contrast between the city's pristine source water and the military contamination 30 miles north is extreme.

Compared to other western metros, Salt Lake's PFAS exposure is localized. Phoenix faces wider contamination from multiple military bases. Las Vegas deals with Colorado River source water that carries accumulated upstream contaminants. SLC's biggest advantage is the quality of its primary source; its biggest risk is the growth pressure pushing development into areas where groundwater quality is less certain.

What Metro Area Residents Should Do

If you're in Salt Lake City proper on canyon water, your PFAS risk from the public supply is minimal. If you're in Davis or Weber County, near Hill AFB, the situation is different and worth monitoring closely.

Check your water to see data for your specific provider. For residents near Hill AFB, our detailed report can show whether the Air Force-funded treatment systems are maintaining effective PFAS removal. Our water filter guide covers backup options for households in contamination zones.
