According to Consumer Reports' 2023 testing, McDonald's wrappers contained detectable fluorine in 4 out of 6 samples tested across three U.S. regions. Burger King and Wendy's showed similar patterns.
But here's the uncertainty: fluorine is a proxy test, not a direct PFAS measurement. It catches 95% of PFAS-treated packaging, but it also flags false positives if the paper used a different fluorinated treatment. Consumer Reports stands by the methodology – we think it's solid but not perfect.
We checked McDonald's 2024 sustainability report. The company says it's "transitioning to PFAS-free materials by 2025" but doesn't specify which products or regions. That timeline has passed. No update yet.

Here's the short version: plant-based fiber leaks grease. Plastic doesn't. So manufacturers spray the fiber with PFAS to make it act like plastic. You get the environmental upside of composting and the chemical downside of forever chemicals that leach into your food.

In February 2024, the FDA announced that manufacturers of grease-proof food packaging would voluntarily phase out PFAS by the end of 2024. Three things about that:
First, "voluntary" means no enforcement. The FDA can't penalize brands that ignore the deadline.
Second, the phase-out applies to new product approvals – not existing inventory. Brands can keep selling PFAS-treated packaging made before 2024 until it runs out.
Third, the FDA's definition of "PFAS-free" allows trace contamination below 100 ppm. Most toxicologists consider anything above 10 ppm a health concern for daily exposure.
So the rule helps, but it's not the clean break the headlines implied.

Skip the compostable containers. Bring your own glass or stainless steel if you're getting takeout. Sounds annoying, but it works.
For fast food, unwrap the burger and put it on a plate as soon as you get home. PFAS migrates faster when the food is hot and greasy. You can't eliminate exposure, but you can cut it by 60-70% according to a 2023 study from the Silent Spring Institute.
Microwave popcorn: switch to stovetop or an air popper. If you must use bags, Quinn is the only brand that tested clean in recent rounds.

The research here is early. Most studies measure PFAS migration from packaging into food using lab conditions – 200°F for 2 hours, that sort of thing. Real-world exposure depends on how hot the food is, how long it sits in the container, and how greasy the food is. Those variables make it hard to estimate actual risk.
We also don't know which PFAS compounds are in each brand's packaging. Fluorine testing tells you PFAS is present but not which one. Some PFAS are more toxic than others. That matters.
And we don't know how much packaging contributes relative to other sources. One estimate from the CDC suggests food packaging accounts for 10-20% of total PFAS exposure for the average American. Drinking water and indoor dust contribute more. But that 10-20% adds up over years of daily takeout.
